LITTLE MORETON HALL and BIDDULPH GRANGE GARDENS ..... finally !!

About this time, last year, the sun was shining so, Mr. Home and I thought we would go and visit Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire.{ All will be revealed later as to why it's taken me a year to post this !!!! } It's a three hour journey from where we live but, it was a lovely day so we jumped into the Audi TT Roadster, down went the hood and off we went. Wind blowing through our hair, sun on our faces .... all was well with the world.

We arrived at Little Moreton Hall { considered one of the finest Tudor timber framed houses in Britain } and, it was a joy to behold. Stepping back in time, over 500 years, we marvelled at the delights of the picture book moated manor house. The South Front reels drunkenly because of it's Elizabethan Long  Gallery. I won't go on about the history of the house ....... I'm sure that you don't want to read reams of facts !!
Mr. Home and I both had a camera and, in a jokey way, I kept nudging his arm and stepping in front of his camera when he was taking a photograph ....... all day I did this { so annoying !!}
This piece of information is relevant as to why it has taken so long to do this post !

Crossing the moat, you enter the cobbled courtyard .....

..... the timber Manor House surrounds you, throwing it's  arms around you in a wonderful homely hug !!

It has been suggested that this heavily decorated fireplace is the only true vertical in the house !!
ALLEGEDLY, there is a grey lady who likes to stun visitors by drifting slowly past them before disappearing ! ..... and, there are also uncontrollable sobs to be heard from a child in and around the chapel...... I didn't hear or see them !

Here is the ' Privy ' ........... a bunch of thyme and lavender provide a natural air freshener !!!!

Pretty much all of the leaded and stained glass remains intact and .....

..... the carpenter, Richard Dale, is immortalised with an inscription on the bay windows.

There is a delightful historic knot garden together with traditional fruit trees of apple, pear, medlar and quince, which are used in delicious cakes and scones, served up in Little Moreton's renowned restaurant.

Just up the road from Little Moreton Hall are Biddulph Grange Gardens so we drove up to take a look at them.

These amazing Victorian gardens were the creation of James Bateman for his collection of plants from around the world. I took photographs and, Mr. Home tried to take photographs while I still jogged his arm and generally made a nuisance of myself !!

The garden takes you on a global journey, from Italy to the pyramids of Egypt, a recreation of a Himalayan glen and,

what was to be my downfall, a Victorian vision of China.

See that bridge ? ....... well, I sat down on it and was about to take a really artistic photograph through the wooden balustrades when .......... I dropped my camera in the water !!!!!!!!!!
I saw it glug, glug, glug to the bottom but could still see it. Mr. Home thought it was hilarious and my come-uppence for messing around earlier. I laid myself prone and put my arm in { up to my shoulder } but, no joy. It was just out of reach. Biddulph is a very large place but, luckily, one of the gardeners was in the Chinese garden and managed to get a net onto the wrist strap of the camera and, just as he was fishing it out, the battery fell out { in slow motion !! } and fell into the deepest part of the little lake.
We glossed over that and went back to the car to make the three hour journey home. It was early evening and the sun was still hot so, the hood went down again and off we went. Just before we hit the motorway we decided that it was time to put the hood back up ........ but the hood decided that it didn't want to go up !! We rang the RAC and he suggested that we get home and they would sort it out then. There was obviously a way of doing it manually but, nobody seemed to know { the manual was back at the house of course !! }
It was just a good job that it was a lovely evening and that there weren't any downpours.

When we got home { roof sorted by lovely Mr. RAC man }, I put the camera's memory card into a bowl of rice to dry out. I'd just read that a scuba diver had found a camera a few hundred feet down and after a bit of drying out, the photographs were all there.
Well, after a few weeks .... NOTHING ..... after a couple of months ..... NOTHING . I threw a couple of those silica gel packets into the rice to see if that would help ..... NOTHING.
..... and then, about a month ago, I found the bowl with the rice, silica and memory card and thought I'd give it one more go and,
VOILA ..... there they all were.
So, that will teach me not to be so horrible to Mr. Home when he is doing his David Bailey thing !!

I think that's called ' Getting your just deserts ' !!

Inspiring work space in a converted warehouse

The more I see of collaborative or shared office spaces the more I feel they are an extremely inspiring and efficient way of working for independent business people! Designer and illustrator Mairead Murphy of Maike Design Studio converted this disused warehouse space in Northcote, Melbourne into a beautiful, vibrant and inspiring work space for independent designers and artists. It's been designed to maintain the natural light and feeling of large open space but zoned to allow both individual and collaborative work. Minamilist materials have been used to allow the original industrial features to shine through. I could work there, could you?!

Photographer: Pictures 1,2,3: Mairead Murphy, Maike Design Studio, Pictures 4,5,6,7,8,9: Sean Fennessey
Mairead has been so wonderful and sent me an extensive list of where the items are from for example, the dining chairs are Thonet 214 (15% discount with code MYSCAN), the sofa is Angelucci, the armchair was found in a skip and upholstered in Kvadrat tonica fabric, the white rug is Jimmy Possum, the pendant lights over the dining table are Lightyears by Caravaggio and the bench and swing are by Pop & Scott. The list is extensive so if you're wondering about anything else just give me a shout below!

Check out another fab collaborative work space here.

PS I'm off to a great friend's wedding tomorrow - so exciting! I hope you all have a lovely weekend. See you Monday!

White and grey Gothenburg home tour

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my house hunting a few years ago. So much so that I was actually a bit sad it was all over when we found our house! I put it down to nosiness. Often when you walk into a home you know instantly if it is a no or a go, others require a little more imagination. With this apartment currently for sale in Gothenburg, Sweden through Stadshem though, you'd want to move in and keep all the furniture. At least I would!

Stadshem

I think what makes the home are the lights. The apple green Bumling in the kitchen and the two pendants over the office space (anyone know what these are?) are so fab. I also like the touch of the Eames DAW chair as an office chair (15% with code MYSCAN).  What about you?

It's an exciting day here at the my scandinavian home residence as I have two talented guests from London visiting with their camera and styling expertise! More to follow shortly....:)

Have a lovely day!

A light and airy Finnish space

Looking through the pictures of this Finnish apartment is like taking a deep breath in, counting to three and a long exhale! The whites, light greys, and wood (love the white shelves against the light wood) create a calming, light and airy feel. I would need to add more rugs for the cosy factor (which I'm discovering are the hardest thing to buy - does anyone else find that?) but other than that I could totally spend a few days here, how about you?

MUSTA OVI via Riazzoli

What's your favourite thing about this home? I think I'll go for the kitchen trolley.....

For more information about this beautiful home (and many more beautiful images) check out the MUSTA OVI blog (in Finnish). Trust me, you'll get lost there!

PS A huge warm welcome to Tjockt  my fabulous new Finnish sponsor who sells THE MOST incredible handmade chunky knit rugs, throws, cushions, stools and cosy items of clothing as well as 'knitted by me' kits so that you can create your own woollies this Autumn (I'd even buy the wooden knitting needles and 100% wool yarns for decoration!)..... you'll definitely want to check out the Tjockt website here and Facebook page here! oh and 15% discount with code SCHOME :)

Have a lovely day!

The lovely new home of Elisabeth Heier

Hello and happy Monday! I hope you had a lovely (sunny?) weekend. Do you remember the home I showed a few weeks ago belonging to Norwegian blogger and photographer Elisabeth Heier? I was having a look through Elisabeth's lovely blog over the weekend and came across images of her new home. I can't believe how much she has done already, it's looking wonderful. And just how cute are her little ones?!

Elisabeth Heier

So light and lovely! I particularly love the concrete floor in the bathroom, the Ay Illuminate Z1 Cotton Lamp in the sitting room and the pigeon light in the children's bedroom, so cute! I've got the same tent for my girls which I found at Swedish shop Granit. I love the picture of her little ones and their outfits too. I'd definitely recommend Loja Dada my wonderful sponsor for similarly cool little outfits.

I hope you all have a lovely Monday.

PPS Is anyone else on Keep?! It's a little like Pinterest except you decide whether you 'keep' or 'buy' things. I joined yesterday and it's soooo addictive dangerous! I love it. You can find my keep handle here, do you have one?

The bohemian home of a Swedish clothes designer

Hello Friday! And what a beautiful sunny day it is here in Sweden too (what about where you are?). This is the lovely home of Lisa Marie Andersson the designer behind clothing label Up The Wooden Hills. Based in Gothernburg, Sweden, Lisa's design philosophy is clothes should be a way of feeling happy, beautiful and comfortable (I'm with are you?!) and as a result her label is dreamy, pretty and playful, just like her home.

Photography: Sofia Byström. Styling: Lisa Marie Andersson, Up The Wooden Hills with kind permission.

Lisa's clothes line is made from Liberty print which takes me back to my own childhood - My Mum often used to sew us dresses using Liberty print and my own little girls still wear them today! The pretty origami items you see in these pictures are also available in her shop. You might want to check out The Up The Wooden Hills blog too!

So any plans for the weekend? Here it's looking super sunny and warm so I'm planning on spending as much time outside as possible starting with some beach time: sand castles and ice lollys anyone?  I'm also getting my home ready for an (exciting) photo shoot next week so lots of decorating to do!! Lots of pictures and details to follow soon!

What about you?

Have a wonderful weekend and see you Monday!

A lovely 'lived in' apartment

My love affair with monochrome is no secret, even more so if it includes white floors or at least beautiful aged light wood floorboards (cue: The Reclaimed Flooring Co). Which is why I like this apartment currently for sale through Stadshem.. The space has been heavily staged but you can still see the personality of the owners shining through (they love music, monochrome, minalism and marmalade and orange juice for breakfast (perhaps)! All in all it has a lovely 'lived in' feel, just as a home should.

Stadshem
For more images check out the home here.

My mind is still on the lovely desk fan. Our bedroom us baking hot at night and we're in need of a fan, which has to not only keep me cool but look cool too naturally! I found some fab ones on Etsy here, here and here.

PS I received two prints in the post from Elina Dahl yesterday (remember her lovely home?). Not only were the prints (here and here) beautiful but the way they were packaged was too - thank you Elina!
